What causes moles?
Most moles develop during childhood and young adulthood. They are less likely to form after the age of 25. The occurrence of moles is the result of cells within the skin grow in clusters rather than being spread out over the skin’s surface. These cells, known as melanocytes, are responsible for giving your skin a natural tone. Excessive sun exposure can result in the darkening of existing moles, particularly during the teenage years and pregnancy.
Are they cancerous?
In most cases, moles are not dangerous. Signs to look for include observing moles that look different compared to others on your body. When a mole evolves too quickly there is less chance of them being benign and so should be analysed by a professional. If there are changes in existing moles’ colours, shapes or size, please speak with a specialist or doctor to evaluate them. Other warning signs to keep an eye out for include any discharge from a mole such as blood, pus, or even finding that certain moles become itchy or tender to the touch.
Surgical vs. Laser mole removal
Surgical removal involves the use of a scalpel to break into or cut out the area of concern. Because of the nature of the procedure, this can cause some bleeding and afterwards may require stitches. This can then develop into a small scar on the affected area.
In contrast, laser mole removal uses laser technology to target the mole cells and ablate the tissue. This method is relatively simpler and causes no bleeding. Laser removal is more ideal because it involves no stitches and a faster healing time. It is an efficient and simple procedure, with minimal discomfort and a faster healing rate.
Cost for mole removal
Treatment pricing for mole removal will start from a minimum of $150 (size of 0.7mm round mole).
The pricing for the removal will depend on the size, location as well as the number of moles that needs to be removed. (The starting price for each mole will be lower if removing multiple moles within the same session)
Our specialist will be able to advise you with a quotation for how much the total removal will cost when you attend a consultation at CMC.
Post-Treatment
The body’s natural healing process replaces the damaged tissue with healthy tissue. Depending on the size and the extent of the removal, the area typically takes 7-10 days to heal. For the first 72 hours, it is important to keep the wound dry and clean, before the scab forms over it. The skin’s complexion may still be a bit red, though this will gradually blend in with the rest of the normal skin colour as the healing progresses. When the wound healing is complete, the scab will eventually fall off and new, healthy skin is regenerated.
It is possible for moles to regrow after removal, but our practice offers follow-up treatments to ensure that we have entirely removed the mole lesion.
