What is acne?
Acne, medically known as Acne Vulgaris, is a disorder of the pilosebaceous unit, which is made up of a hair follicle and sebaceous gland (oil gland).
Acne occurs when the skin’s oil glands produce too much sebum, an oily substance that moisturises the skin. The excess accumulation of sebum along with dead skin cells creates a plug that blocks the pore. This blockage becomes infected with bacteria, resulting in swelling and the formation of a pimple or acne, and may leave stubborn acne scars behind.
Common types of acne
Blackheads: Blackheads generally form when pores are clogged due to debris and oil build-up. The dark colouration of blackheads comes from the oxidation of sebum at the surface.
Whiteheads: This type of acne occurs when the clogged follicles cause the sebum to build up inside the pore, with the white colouration being the sebum, dead cells, and bacteria directly under the skin.
Cystic Acne: Cystic acne is one of the most severe types of acne that are inflamed and filled with pus. It can be caused by hormonal imbalance, improper diet and improper skin care routine.
The key to treating acne is to find the appropriate treatment for your unique skin type and condition. Not everyone responds to the same type of treatment, which is what makes acne difficult to address. What causes acne scars?
Acne scars are permanent textural changes and indentations that may occur as a result of severe acne. If acne is left untreated, it will lead to scarring and can form as pigmentation or dark spots which are more difficult to treat in the long term. When acne occurs, large pus-filled spaces known as the cysts form, destroy the surrounding skin tissue and hinder the healing process. Once the cyst empties the area, allowing it to heal, it leaves behind a scar on the face.
The term “scarring” is not used for the temporary red and brown marks left early after acne has occurred, as these marks will almost always improve without treatment.
Types of acne scar
Ice pick: Deep, but small pits
Boxcar: Sharp angles and edges; can be shallow or deep, these scars appear as small craters in the skin, usually on the cheeks or temples. These are often more difficult to treat.
Rolling: Tend to be wide and shallow (a wavy look) caused by damage under the surface
What’s the cost of the procedure?
Pricing for acne and acne scar treatments will vary greatly depending on your skin type and condition, the severity of the acne and other related concerns, and the span of the areas to be treated. These factors will need to be assessed first in order to determine the type of procedure that will be recommended for you, as well as the number of sessions you will need for your treatment plan.
Our specialist will be able to advise you with a treatment plan and a quotation for how much the total procedure will cost when you attend a consultation at CMC.
