Common Treatment Methods for Tattoo Removal
When a tattoo is applied, ink molecules are deposited into the dermis layer of the skin through ruptures in the skin’s top layer. The body’s natural cleaning system recognises these ink molecules as ‘impurities’, but it cannot remove them due to the size and density of these molecules.
The safest method of Tattoo Removal is with the aid of the Q-Switch Laser.
The Q-Switch laser works by producing very short pulses of intense light at a specific wavelength. This light then passes harmlessly through the top layers of the skin to be selectively absorbed by the tattoo pigment. This laser energy causes the tattoo pigment to fragment into smaller particles which can then be removed by the body’s immune system. The laser is able to selectively target the pigment of the tattoo without damaging the surrounding skin by colour matching the wavelength of light to the ink pigment.
Tattoos can be treated with a wide variety of other methods but in many cases, the procedures are painful and induce scars that are more unsightly than the tattoo itself. Some of these methods include:
Marketed to be able to fade your tattoo over time. However, none of these products have shown to aid in the fading of tattoos in a clinical setting. This is due to the structure of the cream compound and its inability to reach the second, deeper dermis layer of skin. The result is usually a discolouration or scarring of the skin and no actual fading effect to the tattoo.
The skin is “sanded” with a high speed abrasive tool to remove the surface and middle layers of the skin. This method results in scarring to the tattooed area and a lengthy down time.
Similar to Dermabrasion, the skin is abraded using moist gauze pads saturated with a salt solution. This very old method is extremely risky as it can lead to infection and excessive scarring.
A surgeon removes the tattoo with a scalpel and closes the wound with stitches. In some cases involving large tattoos, a skin graft from another part of the body may be necessary. This method is expensive but may be suitable for the quick removal of smaller tattoos. The resulting wound and stitches will leave scarring.
