What causes ingrown toenails?
Ingrown toenails occur as a result of an injury to the toe which causes the nail to grow into the flesh of the side of the toe. This results in swelling, release of bacteria, pain and even infection in some cases.
The most common cause of ingrown toenails is injury to the toe. Ingrown toenails can also be triggered by how people cut their nails such as cutting them too short or not evenly. The big toes are the most commonly affected by ingrown toenails. Additional causes can be associated with footwear not properly suited to the person’s foot.
