What causes ingrown toenails?

Ingrown toenails occur as a result of an injury to the toe which causes the nail to grow into the flesh of the side of the toe. This condition results in swelling of the toe, the release of bacteria, pain and even infection in some cases.

The most common cause is injury to the toe. It can also be triggered by people cutting their nails incorrectly, such as cutting them too short or not evenly. The big toes are the most commonly affected by ingrown toenails. Other additional causes can be associated with wearing shoes or footwear not properly suited to the person’s foot, resulting in added pressure to the toes.

How to prevent ingrown toenails

Wear footwear that suits the structure of your foot and is not too small.

Ensure that toenails are kept at moderate length and that they are even.

As much as possible, always wear socks with footwear

Poor foot hygiene can result in ingrown toenails, so it is imperative that you take care of, clean and dry your feet often.

Athletes are most at risk when it comes this, so extra precaution should be made when choosing footwear and dressing the foot.
