SKIN CONCERN:

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Fine Lines and Wrinkles are an inevitable part of the natural aging process. Every single person will experience some degree of wrinkles and sagging skin as they age.

What causes Fine Lines and Wrinkles?

As we get older, our skin becomes thinner, drier and less elastic. Our skin’s ability to protect itself from damage is also reduced as we age. Eventually, wrinkles, creases and lines form on our skin. This is completely normal, and some people may experience more of this at an earlier age than others. The good news is that it can be addressed to varying degrees and effectiveness. The reason why wrinkles and sagging occur is that the collagen structures and elastin in the dermis (inner) layer of the skin begin to shrink and break down, therefore providing less support for the epidermis (outer) layer of skin to hold onto.

The epidermis layer of skin also begins to thin, your skin’s fat stores and underlying muscles begin to deplete. This combination causes the epidermis to dry out, succumb to the effects of gravity and begin to sag and form lines and wrinkles. The rate at which this happens is affected by many things such as genetics, health and age.

Ageing

As we age, our skin cells divide at a much slower rate, the skin’s inner layer begins to thin and starts to undo the skin’s natural stretchiness and structure.

Facial Expressions

Smiling, frowning, squinting can lead to the appearance of frown lines and crow’s feet. Muscle contractions plus gravity and age contribute to the formation of jowls and drooping eyelids.

Smoking

Smoking curbs your skin’s production of collagen. This downturn paves the way for wrinkle formation and also makes them harder to treat. That is one more reason to quit smoking or never to start.

Sun Damage

About 90% of all symptoms associated with premature skin ageing can be attributed to sun damage. Being overexposed to UV radiation can lead to the premature formation of wrinkles in your skin.

What causes Sagging Skin?

When you consider that sagging skin is one of the main contributors to looking older as we age, it comes as no surprise to know that the phrase “Skin Tightening” is the most searched cosmetic topic on the internet. Unfortunately, every single person will experience some degree of sagging skin as they age.

Obese individuals who have lost a large amount of weight often have problems with excess skin. Typically, this occurs as a result of extreme dieting. In the instance of weight loss, the best way to prevent sagging skin is to monitor your weight reduction-making sure to pace yourself. The excess fat in the body stretches the skin. Depending on your age, you may find that the flesh does not “snap back” with the same elasticity as it would have when you were younger. Thus, a gradual approach is the best way to get your skin to adjust to your weight changes.

You may think that only women of a certain age have to fight gravity’s effect on the skin. But many women who enjoy soaking up the sun rays often discover one problem or another later in life. Putting aside all the risks of skin cancer, the sun has other ways of damaging the skin. Though you may emerge from beach sands with a chic, toasty complexion, the sun’s drying effects eventually wreak havoc on skin’s natural elasticity. So, if you’re going to play about outside during the spring and summer months, sunscreen and extra moisturising are imperative for fighting the effects of gravity.
